I don’t usually write about coffee shops, or locations in Hongdae for that matter, but I was compelled to write a little piece after visiting Baristella last week. My good friend Courtney was asked to be part of the grand opening photo shoot and she was asked to bring friend and since I was at a loose end I’d figured I’d go and check it out too.
The new store is set over four floors and is decorated in a very modern and colourful style, they also have a huge open front for when the sun is shining, so you can sit overlooking the street and people watch.
Since we were there to do a photo shot we were actually pictured with quite a different variety of menu items, which I of course was thrilled about as I was only expecting a coffee. We practically tried the whole menu!
My favourite of all the drinks was the Cotton Candy Yogurt Smoothie (5,200). I was so in love with this cute and adorable drink, it just looked so pretty. It was also very tasty too, almost like a lemonade and yogurt mix. It was very refreshing and just the right amount of sweet and sour notes.
We also had a Triple Cheese Smoothie (5,200). There really just aren’t enough drinks in this world which come garnished with a slice of cake. This one really was a liquid version of a cheesecake, it was super scrummy.
Lastly we tried the Gummy Worm Ade (5,200). This drink was also delicious, a sweet and refreshing ade with yummy gummy worms at the bottom. I know they are novelty drinks but they were just so much fun, and delicious too!
As well as the fabulous dessert drinks they also have a huge variety of bagels, 10 to be precise, with over 14 different flavoured cream cheeses to put inside them. We were lucky enough to try a few of the bagels and I had to say they were very tasty, though my favourite was the jalapeno with scallion cream cheese. With the amount of options they had it was just like being in New York again.
Overall I was very impressed by Baritella and will definitely be popping in again next time I’m in Hongdae, the desserty smoothies are just perfect for the summer and the bagels were really good too. It’s the ideal place for a casual first date. They also do a bagel set which comes with an Americano for less that 5,000, and they let you choose your own bagel, you can’t say fairer than that.
Baristella is located at 358-31 Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. To get there take a train to Sangsu Station (line 6) and come out of exit 1. Turn back on your self and walk straight for about 300 meters until you reach the park. Go up the steps on the left and walk through. You will see Baristella just ahead of you, a few doors down from The Beastro. For more information you can call them on 02-333-6602 or check out their facebook page.
