NY Burger & Bagel – Brunch

Brunch is my favourite meal of the week, there are few things that I enjoy more than catching up with friends on the weekend over a leisurely meal. However finding new and delicious spots for brunch where you don’t have to queue up outside for about 1000 hours in this city is no easy task. And to make matters worse, over the past year lots of my favourite brunch spots have closed. So when NY B&B got in touch with me to share that they are now serving brunch and invited me to come try it I of course couldn’t resist (and if you have tried their burgers before, then you wouldn’t either).  Since NY B&B focuses on American food, I thought I’d take a couple of ‘Mericans with me to get their take on it. The brunch is currently only available at the new Hannam branch, which has been open for almost six months. The restaurant is much bigger than the original in Gangnam, and is light and airy thanks to its floor to ceiling windows, making it perfect for brunch.

I’m not usually one to start my day with something sweet, but the pancakes are the real star of the menu here so we were eager to try them. The batter is freshly made in small batches and only keeps for 2 hours at a time. In fact if you plan on coming with a large group or on a weekday morning it’s best to call ahead and make a reservation to make sure they have enough batter on hand. I always like to start with the most basic version of something before moving on to the more experimental version so we kicked off with the Butter Milk Pancakes (8,500). While I like pancakes well enough, they aren’t a food I lust after, or go out to eat often enough. Maybe I’ve just eaten too many bad ones and find them easy enough to make at home. However these surpassed all my expectations, they were light as air, and as fluffy as a cloud. Topped with real maple syrup, berries and whipped cream we finished every bite. Hands down the best pancakes I’ve had in Korea and much better than Original Pancake House in my opinion. We then moved on to the Red Velvet Pancakes (10,500), which were bright red and covered a sweet cream cheese frosting. I was really excited about these, but found they hadn’t quite managed to recreate the texture or the flavour of red velvet cake. I was hoping for more of that sour chocolatey taste. we really liked the cream cheese drizzle though. The last pancakes we tried were the Chocolate Chip Pancakes (10,500), which were just as good as the buttermilk ones with the addition of chocolate chips. I haven’t actually had chocolate chip pancakes before but was informed by my companions they are an American staple. The other sweet item on the menu is the Almond Crusted French Toast (11,500). The bread used is very thick and crusted with nuts, which makes it very filling. When topped with the bananas, maple syrup and cream is is absolutely delicious.

After trying our sweet dishes, we moved on to the savoury. First to try was the Little Man Breakfast (14,500), which considered of bacon, 2 eggs, home fries, and toast. The home fries on this were epic. It is hard to describe how orgasmic they really were but I shall try. They were crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and very well seasoned so they had their own kind of yummy flavour going on. All three of us were fighting over them, In fact I’d never stop eating them given the chance and they are worth going back for alone. As for the rest of the platter, the bacon was crisp, and the toast was thick and served with butter. A simple American breakfast if ever there was one. For really big eaters they do an extra large version of this called the Big Boy which comes with steak.

Lastly we finished with the Omelette Platter (17,500) which turned out to be our unanimous favourite. The 3 egg omelette was stuffed with mushrooms and mozzarella and was topped with bacon. The omelette itself was light and fluffy without being monstrous in size or over cooked like most omelettes in town. Being a huge fan of mushrooms I also adored the cheese and mushroom filling inside. It was served with more of those incredible home fries, toast, and a side salad which added a touch of colour. While it is rather on the pricey side as omelettes go, it is very filling.

Overall we had a fab meal, not only does NY B&B do awesome burgers, they clearly know how to put on a good brunch too. While the menu caters to the American crowd, there are plenty of dishes to please us Brits. The only thing missing are boozy brunch cocktails, which they assured me they are working on. In the meantime they still have wine, beer, and a pretty well stocked bar, and are happy to make you anything you like if they have the ingredients.

Lobster Bar

Lobster Bar in Itaewon just celebrated their 3 year anniversary, it truly is insane how quickly time flies these days. It seems like only last summer that they opened up in their first location on the hill, and had hordes of hungry patrons queuing up to get in on the new lobster roll trend.  To celebrate this momentous occasion and keep things fresh they have added some new items to the menu. They kindly invited me along to give them a try, and I was powerless to resist, I mean who says no to free lobster right?

One trend that isn’t going away any time soon is burgers, so putting a new lobster burger on the menu was a very savvy idea. The lobster burger (17,900), certainly looks very impressive, and will look very attractive on your Instagram feed. After taking about 18,000 pictures of it, I finally got to lock my lips around the mighty mound. The burger itself pretty tasty, and it remained firm despite the tower of ingredients topping it.  While I enjoyed the lobster and cheeseburger combo, I wast sure about the addition of the jalapeno mayo as I think it took away from the flavour of the lobster. There are plans to add a few different versions to the menu in the next few weeks, so I think they could come up with a few interesting options.

As well as the burger, we also tried the Spicy Bang Bang Shrimp (9,500). I was really happy to see this on the menu, as Bang Bang chicken is a dish I always order from the Chinese takeaway back home, so was pleased to see it here in Korea. We both really enjoyed this dish. The crispy battered shrimp were large and juicy and the spicy mayo sauce was very moreish. The shrimp were on top of a pile of rice and lettuce, so you could easily eat this as a main dish to yourself, or share it as a starter.

We also got to try the new Fried Crab Popcorn (9,000). This was a giant paper cone filled with tiny deep fried crabs. They made the perfect dish to snack on while we were enjoying our drinks, especially when dipped into the accompanying chili mayo. I thought they made a an interesting addition to the menu as they differ from the spicy Korean style.

To drink I of course had to order my favourite cocktail, the Tropical Berry Punch (15,000). This drink is all kinds of blackcurranty fruity goodness and is a highly addictive tropical treat. I also think it has grown in size since my last visit too, which is never a bad thing.  TFB was rather boring and stuck with a pint of Great White (9,000), however their drinks menu is actually pretty varied and has quite a selection including rather cheap bottles of spirits if you are dining with a large group

Overall we had a great dinner, and it is always nice to return to an old favourite. The menu has been kept fresh and and it is clear that Lobster Bar really cares about their food and keeping their customers coming back. I’m glad to see that they are expanding their range of seafood, while still keeping their most popular items like the lobster sandwiches on the menu. If you are hankering for some shellfish, then this is the place to get it.

NY Burger & Bagel – Hannam

When it rains it pours, all my favourite burger joints seem to be opening up new stores, clearly the new burger craze isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact it isn’t just Korea, burgers are booming all over the world, my Instagram feed is filled to the brim with burger porn. So recently my favourite Itaewon burger place Itaewon the Burger opened up a new shop in Gangnam, and now my favourite Gangnam burger place NY B&B has opened up a place in Hannam, how will I ever decide which one to go to? Thankfully I was invited to the soft opening of both so didn’t have to choose.

NY Burger & Bagel is at the higher end of the burger spectrum in terms of price, class, and quality of ingredients. They only use USDA Prime beef in their burgers. While the Gangnam space is cute quaint and rustic and a step away from the soulless Gangnam haunts, this new version really puts the New York back into NY B&B. The space is very large, which is unusual for this part of town, there is a long bar running against one wall, and huge floor to ceiling walls against the other. In between is seating for about 65. The light filled space makes it perfect for brunch, hopefully one of these days I’ll get to try the bagel part of the name.

It had been a long week, and what with the heat wave we are suffering right now I was in desperate need of a drink. We kicked off with the Hand & Malt Hard Apple Cider (8,000), which was uber refreshing and the only thing to drink in summer. We also had the Gin and Earl Grey signature drink (10,000), a strong and refreshing tea infused gin concoction. While the taste wasn’t bad I still think it needs a little finessing to get it right. We visited during the soft opening so they were still tinkering with a couple of the items, however I was glad to see that this location is serving cocktails.

On to the burgers, my favourite of the NY B&B burgers is the Wasaaabi, but as we were invited to try the new ones we kicked off with the Bruchetta ’bout It (14,500). This baby was topped with mozzarella cheese, bruchetta tomatoes, and homemade aioli. Being one of my favourite appetisers, I was interested how this would work out as a burger. The sweet and juicy chopped tomatoes were the perfect topping for the tasty and well seasoned beef patty, with the creamy aioli this was really a dream burger and very well balanced in terms of flavour. One thing I’m loving about this location is that the burgers come served with fries, which is rare in this city. We upgraded from the free plain ones to the parmesan garlic fries for an extra 1,500, which was worth every penny in my opinion. The other burger we tried was the Uptown Girl (16,500), a burger topped with avocado, pepper jack, lettuce and tomato. When I first tried it, this one seemed a bit lacking in taste for me, so I asked for a slice of bacon which really kicked it up a notch, it could also benefit from a slightly spicier mayo. We got this one served with the Chili Cheese Fries (4,500 upgrade). These were awesome, some of the best I’ve had, the chili had an really tomato-ey chili topping which was super tasty. Not sure which fries I liked best, so I would recommend you get both!

For those poor souls who like to live a carb-free life, you may be interested in the Atkins Slider Trio (17,5000). This came as a trio of sliders, the wasabi, the bruchetta, and roast beef. The mini wasabi burger was topped with shiitake mushrooms, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese and wasabi mayo. This little beauty was just as good as the full sized version I previously reviewed.  The bruchetta was just a mini bunless version of the burger above. However the real star of this dish was the roast beef. This was my favourite by far, and the most amazing roast beef I have ever had in Korea. The pink slivers of juicy beef were sat in a puddle of super scrummy gravy. It was so good I wanted to lick the plate clean. I will definitely be trying the full-sized roast beef sandwich in the near future for sure. The only way they could improve this dish, is if they served them all inside mini buns, though I guess that would kind of defeat the point.

Despite our groaning bellies announcing we were full, we still had to have dessert. We opted for the Orange Dreamsicle Float (6,000). I loved the creamy orange combo. It was sweet and tangy all at the same time. It was a superb way to end the meal and a great way to beat the heat.

Tonight is the Grand Opening of the new NY Burger & Bagel so they are having a special event, a Bruchetta burger and fries, or Chicken Club Sandwich and fries for only 10,000 won. There will also be live music. This offer is for tonight only, so if you don’t have dinner plans it is the perfect place to go.

Itaewon the Burger Gangnam

It took me a long time and many meals to find a burger that I love in this city, and I finally found it at Itaewon the burger. It is by far and away my favourite burger joint in Seoul, and it is clear that I am not the only one who thinks so as they have just expanded and opened a new location in Gangnam. Knowing what a fan I am of their food, they invited me and a couple of my bestest friends to come and give the the new menu items a try.  The new place is huge and located on the second floor of a building in Seolleung, it’s bigger, brighter, and more colourful than the sister store. I always find it difficult to find good places to eat when I am in this part of town, so I am sure people are out rejoicing in the streets about this new addition to the neighbourhood.

The big speciality of this new location are these amazing freakshakes, which are sadly not available in Itaewon. So far there are three on the menu: The signature shake being the Swag the Party (13,900), a peanut butter shake topped with half a sweet shop. The glass is encrusted with MnMs, and topped with marshmallows, wafers, peanut butter cups, caramel sauce and a giant ass lollipop. This one is definitely for the sweet toothed among us and a total sugar rush, pro tip, you can get a salted version which is even yummier. The shake itself was lovely and if you are sharing between a few of you, I’m sure you’ll have fun doling out the candy between you.

As well as the Swag Party there is also the Toasted Marshmallow Mount (10,900), a chocolate and hazelnut milkshake which was topped with toasted marshmallows, hazelnuts, cookies, wafers and peanut butter cups. This one was my favourite, as I adore hazelnut, it was kind of like a giant Ferrero Rocher. Last up is the healthiest shake, the Avocado and Banana (10,900). This was a mix of vanilla, banana, and avocado. This one I wasn’t quite so sure about. I often enjoy a bit of avocado in my green smoothies as I like the creaminess but as a flavour all by itself I wasn’t convinced. My two dining companions liked it more than me though, and the slices of fresh avocado must make it worth about a billion dollars by itself.

The burger menu is the same as at the Itaewon location. My favourite of all the ones I have tried is the Big Double Burger (13,900). It consists of 2 x 140g beef burgers, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion,pickles, and a healthy slathering of mayo . It has been a couple of months since I last had one but after retasting it, I was glad to find that it lived up to all my expectations. When I bit into it, it got a loud and resounding Mmm. It was the favourite of both of my dining companions too.  The burgers here are flame grilled, which is probably what makes them so great in my eyes, and gives them a healthy edge on the competition.

Since my last review the Avocaddict (13,900) has been added to the menu. This is one serious burger, and I have tried it on a couple of occasions over the past few months. It is absolutely monstrous and you will have one hell of a time trying to eat it, just check out my Instagram video if you don’t believe me. This really is an avocado lovers dream, and as you can see they aren’t chintzy with the avocado. Avocado and bacon is always the perfect combination, throw it on a burger and it is party time. While it is jolly hard to eat, it is blooming tasty, the beef and avocado make such a good match. They also serve a version in a lettuce wrap instead of bread for anyone who wants a lighter option.

The other new item we got to try was the Bacon Cheese Fries (6,900). I have never been a fan of the fake cheese-like paste that Americans seem to be fond of. But these were awesome, not sure if it was the bacon, the fake cheese or a combination. They were just uber rich and salty, and we polished them off pretty quickly. The crunchy chunks of bacon were very plentiful, it was such a great sharing dish.

By the time the three of us has polished off this mountain of food, we were fit to bursting, which is always a good sign in my book. If you keep eating even though you are full it always means the food is good. The new restaurant is a great addition down in Gangnam. Other than Firebell there really aren’t a whole bunch of western burgers in this area, so hopefully it will prove to be very popular with the locals. The space is great, and I’m told reasonably quiet at the moment on the weekends because they mainly cater to the office crowds. So if you trying to get away from the madness that is Itaewon on the weekend then this is your place.

Seoul’s Best Burger

Move over Fashion week, it is time for Seoul’s most important event, American Burger Week! Well technically it’s burger fortnight. From April 14th –  28th, 13 of Seoul’s burger restaurants will be participating in the special event which is being hosted by the US Beef Council. The restaurants involved are Gony’s, Gilbert’s Burger & Fries, NY B&B, The Melting Pot, Devils door, Rye Post, Meat & Bun, Burger B, Say cheese, Itaewon the Burger, Kinders, Firebell, and Fingertips. I’m told that all the restaurants in question use American beef and will be running promotions and giveaways for the two weeks. Now I  haven’t been to all of the restaurants in question,  but I have been to a fair few, some I was in love with, some not so much. So as it’s burger week and all, I thought I would use this opportunity to list my favourite places in Seoul to get a burger.

1. Itaewon the Burger – This baby while still quite new is absolutely top of my list, number one because the burgers are flame grilled hunks of deliciousness but also because it’s in my neigbourhood. There are two burgers that I love here. The Big Double Burger (12,900) which includes two meat patties, bacon and cheese, or the Avocadict burger (13,800), which includes a mountain of avocado, a beef patty, cheese, bacon, pickles, special sauce, lettuce and tomato. The prize for number one probably has to go to the Big Double, as the Avocadict although delicious fails at being a burger slightly by being so impossible to eat.

2. NY B&B – This place is my Gangnam go to. Again this place is fairly new, but they have really came up with some awesome homemade burgers. The Wasabi Burger (11,500) is probably my favourite. This delight is topped with Pepper Jack cheese, grilled onion, shiitake mushroom, and wasabi mayo. As much as I love wasabi I was first a little skeptical about this meaty treat but it has ended up being my favourite on their menu. The menu is pretty large, so there is something for everyone. Special mentions for the Once in a Bleu Moon and the Bubba Gump which were both pretty good too.

3. Gony’s – Gony’s is a new comer to me and I was kinda torn between this one and Gilbert for third place but I decided to give Gony’s the edge because they also serve a mean chicken burger and that is pretty hard thing to find in Seoul. On the beef front the Bacon Cheeseburger (9,800) is pure perfection and everything you are looking for in a good old fashioned burger.

4. Gilbert’s Burgers & Fries – Gilbert’s always serves a good burger and they have quite a few locations too, making it the most accessible on the list. My favourite burger on their menu is the 5oz Gilbert (10,500). This one is topped with American cheese, red onion, tomato, lettuce, bacon, fried egg, and a homemade sauce. As you can see from above the egg yolk oozes out of the side of the burger which really gets my motor running and adds an extra richness to the burger.

5. WinK – Last place on this list goes to WinK who have been making some really solid burgers for the past year. I’m kinda torn when it comes to choosing my favourite though. I adore The Mega Burger (14,000), which has everything but the kitchen sink on it but it really works. Inside the buttered bun is a 150g whole beef patty, pulled pork, several kinds of cheese, egg, avocado, lettuce onions, tomato, and mayo. However I’m also partial to the brand new Mushroom & Emmental burger (11,500), which I tried on my last brunch visit. So I guess it depends on whether you like mushrooms or not.

Gony’s

I think we all know how I enjoy a burger or four, but you might also know how picky I am. And how I often struggle to find burgers I truly  love in Seoul. Some time ago, an old friend recommended Gony’s to me, but the fact it was located across the city put me off giving it a try. Well last weekend I was in the neighbourhood and couldn’t resist giving it a try. The restaurant is located a stop or two away from Wangsimni at Ttukseom Resort station. This neighbourhood actually has some cool stuff happening, as we were walking around looking for it we passed a bakery with a queue I haven’t seen since the glory days of the churros, considering it was raining at the time it was very impressive, but I digress. We were on our way to Gony’s for a banging burger.

The spot is really cute and has a couple of seats outside, and plenty more large benches and booths inside. The menu is actually quite sizeable, well the Korean version is, the English one is probably in need of updating. We were a rather big group so we were able to take full advantage of it. There are a handful of beef burgers, some chicken burgers and other side dishes, and milkshakes. They also had beers and what looks like a reasonably stocked bar if you like a side of shitfaced with your burger.

I had to try the Bacon Cheeseburger (9,800). I was very tempted to go for the double, but thought I should stick with the single to really test their muster. Homemade brioche buns are pretty much a standard requirement these days, but I was glad to see they had them. This burger was simply topped with bacon, american cheese, lettuce and tomato. There was definitely a small mmm when I bit into it and I was certainly satisfied. The meat was well seasoned, and all in all I really couldn’t fault it. It would certainly be in my top 5 burgers in Seoul.

As well as the the beef burgers here were a handful of chicken burgers on the menu too, so we ordered the Mexican Chicken Burger (12,800). To me this was really a stand out, the breading was insanely crispy, and the chicken inside  was tender and juicy. Good hamburgers are ten a penny now but its rare to find a chicken burger as good as this. There were a handful of variations of it, I’d love to try the coleslaw version next time.

Being a large group we also decided to indulge in a portion of the Chili cheese fries (12,000). I’m always of the opinion that if you are going to have fries you might as well eat them slathered in chili and cheese. These ones had lots of fresh chilies strewn throughout making them a touch on he hot side for my milky taste buds. But there was plenty of chili though, making them nice and wet. On the cheese front however it was more of a cheese sauce than actual cheese

Lastly we tried the Original Chicken and Rice (7,800). I think it is really well documented on this blog how much I love chicken and rice, so when I saw this on the menu I had to see how it compared. Different from Jil Hal Bros, or Halal Guys, but in the same ball park. For this one the chicken is deep fried chunks of butter milk fried chicken, which was really nice. The rice is Korean style, coloured yellow, which I could live with, topped with spicy sauce and white sauce. It was not a bad representation and if I lived in that neighbourhood I’d be happy enough with it being the only version available locally.

Overall I was very impressed, and if you live nearby it is a must try,k and if you don’t it is still worth the trip over there if you a burger fanatic. Gony’s has a motto printed all over the place “life is too short to eat shitty things,” and I have to say that I concur.

NY Burger & Bagel

As you may know my search for a good burger in this city has been relentless, and I tried dozens of places before finally finding my favourite  at Itaewon the Burger. If you ever think that my blog is always on the positive side and never offers bad reviews, that is because it is carefully curated and I only share my favourites or those I find to have value in their uniqueness or locations . After expressing my disappointment with so many of the burger joints that I tried and didn’t blog about on my Instagram account I was reached out to by many other burger aficionados who felt the same way I did. One of these was NY Burger and Bagel in Gangnam, which the owner Mark declared to be the best burger in Seoul, I snorted with derision as I had heard that plenty of times before, but when he kindly invited me and a few friends to give them a try with no obligation to write a review, I figured why not. The restaurant is located right by Gangnam station, which is really a bit of a black hole when it comes to good eating, as the exorbitant rents have pretty much left us with a load of old crap, so for that alone I figured it would make an interesting post if the claims were true.

The restaurant is located a couple of streets back from the main drag, just far enough to get away from the hustle and bustle of Gangnam life. The restaurant is adorably cute with a white facade, faux grass and some tables outside. Once the spring comes around this will be a prime piece of real estate to brunch in, but since it was -6 we favoured a table indoors. The Inside is fairly small with a large semi open kitchen taking up a good third of the space but was still ample enough for me and my crew and a large table of office workers.

As we were guests of the proprietor he kindly asked if he could select his favourite items for us to try. Being a pretty agreeable bunch we were cool and the gang with that and we kindly accepted a delicious glass of mulled wine while we waited. Unfortunately the mulled wine is a season item but I was assured that it is going to be replaced by a cocktail that is equally delicious.  The first burger to arrive was the Once in a Bleu Moon (11,500). I’m a blue cheese queen so couldn’t resist the lure of a burger topped with blue cheese and crispy bacon. The beef burger was cooked to medium, and was well seasoned, while the bun was soft and and buttery. The burgers here don’t come served with anything, which is kind of a pet peeve of mine (fries are mandatory in a burger experience, not optional) so we ordered a portion of parmesan garlic fries (8,000). This was a large portion that we shared between four of us. It also came with a fresh herb ranchy type dip called the green goddess which we were all fighting over until it it was gone. Like most burger places in Korea they also do 1/2 sets of fries with a drink for 5,500.

 

The second burger we tried was the The Wasaaabi??? (11,500). A beef burger topped with pepperjack cheese, grilled onion, shiitake mushroom, and wasabi mayo. As much as I love wasabi I was first a little skeptical about this meaty treat but it ended up being the unanimous favourite of the day. Beef and wasabi is surprisingly a match made in heaven, and after consideration, it being so close to mustard, I can see why. The wasabi was mixed with mayo so it wasn’t at all overbearing and you could still taste the flavour of the beef, and the shiitake mushrooms cheese and grilled onions. It was a total Mmm experience. My only regret was that I was sharing it with three other people.

 

The last burger we tried was the Bubba Gump (22,000). The Forrest Gump namesake is topped with blackened cajun shrimp, american cheese, salad and cajun mayo. It’s pretty steep at 22,000 but hey it’s Gangnam and there are plenty of more reasonably priced options on the menu. I really liked this one, as I was loving the cajun mayo. Honestly I don’t know if I really needed the shrimp, I was more than happy to eat them but I think the same burger without them would have been just as tasty and a hell of a lot cheaper. We finished up with a drinkable dessert in the form of their Peanut Butter Milkshake(5,500). This was indescribably rich and ice- creamy and every sip was totally nutillicious. This was the thick shake that I have been longing for, for quite some time and we all agreed it was the perfect way to end the meal.

Overall I really enjoyed the burgers at NY Burger and Bagel, the Wasabi burgers gave me the Mmm factor I was looking for and I’m thrilled to have a good place to eat near Gangnam station. The menu is quite large so if burgers aren’t your bag there is also a breakfast menu and some other popular NY style lunch items that the owner missed from living in New York. When the weather turns warmer than this will be an ideal spot for a weekend brunch and I’ll certainly be giving them another try once spring rolls around.

Call it an early Christmas present but I may have just found my new favourite burger. After the months and months of searching and the endless recriminations from fellow foodies I have finally found a burger that makes me go Mmmm. I have been all over town searching for a burger that I can love, while I have found plenty that I like none have quite made the cut until now. (more…)

Fire Bell

Whenever anyone makes a restaurant recommendation to me, I add it to a list on my phone, and Fire Bell has been on that list for well over a year and a half. The south of the river burger joint is widely regarded as one of, if not the best burger in Seoul. Its not that I haven’t wanted to try it, its just that it is all the way down in Daechi-dong and until now I’ve just been to lazy to drag my fat arse over there.

Well as luck would have it, TFB was taking part in a charity soccer match in that very area. I don’t usually give him much support in his sporting endeavours, so I thought it was about time I stood by my man, and if I managed to get a burger at the same time, well that was killing two birds with one stone.

As the name suggests Fire bell has a kind of fire station theme going on. The place is completely decked out in red and white check, all the burgers are aptly named within the theme and there are tonnes of cute and quirky decorating touches like this adorable break in case of fire, toasted marshmallow kit.

As you may or may not know I don’t really enjoy the patties of american burgers. For me they just seem lacking. I am looking for a burger that makes me go Mmmm when I bite into it, a burger so tasty I have to buy another one straight after. Not a tall order you would imagine, but so far I’ve yet to find a 10/10 burger here in Seoul. After perusing the menu I opted for the Rookie (7,000). I decided to stick with the classic so I could really rate the burger for itself and not its toppings. First things first, the bun was delicious, by far the best bun tried, the cheese and grilled onions were as expected but just something was a bit lacking in the patty itself. Although for the price, and someone less picky than I, a solid choice.

We also gtr a second burger, the Call 911(9,000) which was topped with american cheese, spicy sauce, tomato, jalapeno, and lettuce and I cant say that I enjoyed it. Even TFB, who likes hot sauce on everything, found the heat to completely overwhelm any taste of the burger. It was a poor choice on his part, also mine, as I rarely let him choose for himself and I wish I had forced him into ordering one of the others instead. We made this one a set for an extra 4,000 which is incredibly reasonable. We got a half portion of twisty fries which I thought made a nice change and a sprite. I wasn’t really in the mood for a milkshake that day, but the menu had a nice selection and looked pretty good from what i could see.

Although I wasn’t that crazy for the burgers here, I still wanted to share it as hey, it’s very well priced and there really inst a lot of competition in the area. It’s similar to Brooklyn Burger and Gilbert Burger. Gilbert burger is easily my favourite of the three, though I found Fire Bell to be better than Brooklyn. And price wise its the best of the bunch. I can’t say it was worth the trip across town for me, but it seems as though I’m incredibly hard to please when it comes to burgers, and I’d more than likely go again if I was in the neighbourhood.

WinK Kitchen & Taphouse

A few weeks ago I was invited back to WinK  to come and try their new menu. It had been some time since my last visit so I was curious to see what was new.  The Gyodae pub has been open for over a year and a half now and they have recently hired a new chef who has revamped their menu. While they are still serving their popular classic dishes, he has also added his own personal flair and flavour to the menu.

One of the new dishes is the Spicy Pork Belly Sandwich (9,500). I love a slab of juicy pork between my lips so really couldn’t resist giving this a try. Housed in a long soft roll was a a melt in the mouth piece of pork belly that was soft as butter. This is very important when putting it in a sandwich as you don’t want to get through the bread and have trouble biting through the meat. The Thai glaze smothering the meat is advertised as spicy and it certainly hits that note. Inside the sandwich were pickled radish and carrots, cucumber, and cilantro which provided a sour and refreshing crunch to cut through the spice. If the sauce was slightly less spicy this would be a an absolute knock out for me.

Since it first opened, WinK has always been popular for its burger selection.  All the burgers are on the hearty side and very filling and I ordered the biggest of the bunch The Mega Burger (14,000), which kind of made me feel like I was at the Peach Pitt in Beverly Hills 90210. This burger has everything but the kitchen sink on it but it really works. Housed inside the buttered bun is a 150g whole beef patty, pulled pork, several kinds of cheese, egg, avocado, lettuce onions, tomato, and mayo. Burger purists may not agree but I loved the combination of flavours, and any bite that included that oozy egg yolk was a winner for me.

Also on the menu are plenty of topped fries, and our favourite was the Loaded Fries (8,900). Although nothing groundbreaking in culinary terms, the fries topped with cheese, bacon and sour cream were quite hard to resist, and we didn’t leave many on the plate.

As with any good pub, the drinks remain cheap and cheerful. They have a variety of Platinum ales on tap and plenty of mixed cocktails all ranging from 5,000 – 9,000 won. The lemon drop was probably my favourite whereas my companions enjoyed the mocha stout. If you live south of the river and are looking for a good time, it is certainly worth stopping by.
