Christmas Dinner Guide 2017

Thanksgiving is yesterdays news, and there are only a few more weeks until Christmas!!!!. Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year, I just adore getting gussied up, filling my belly with seasonal treats and drinking far too many champagne cocktails. Once January comes around Seoul gets insanely cold and personally I try to leave the house as little as possible, so now is the time to do as much celebrating and eating out as possible. Choosing the correct place to spend your special day is of the utmost importance, especially if you are visiting from out of town. Luckily I’ve put together a list of some of the best options of where to eat this holiday season.This list is in no means complete so stay tuned because I will be adding more events as the days roll by, but this should be enough to get you started.

La Marmite – HBC’s very own French bistro will be offering a four day special set menu for the festive period from December 22nd-25th. The six course menu includes a bisque, scallops, homemade ravioli, stout braised beef, cheese plate with homemade bread, and chocolate fondant with tarragon ice cream. The dinner costs 75,000 per person, with an optional wine pairing for an extra 25,000. Reservations are recommended and can be made via the event facebook page.

Urban Farm TableUFT reopened this year in a new location and I for one am thrilled as i loved the old restaurant a lot and was sad when the farm to table eatery closed. They are are putting on an 8 course menu for a lucky few (the place is very small so can only host 8) on December 23rd & 24th. The menu which includes scallops, pork and locally made cheese will be 100,000 per person, or 150,000 if you want a 5 course wine pairing. Having had Chef Roydon’s food before, I am sure you are in for a treat, and this is a real foodie’s type of event. For more details you can visit their facebook page.


Braai Republic – The South African pub will be doing their traditional South African Christmas lunch on December 25th. The 3 course set menu menu includes, a steaming glass of Glühwein, cream of mushroom soup, leg of lamb, bobotie sausage, mashed potato & gravy and mixed veggies, and malva pudding and ice cream for dessert.  Tickets cost 45,000 per person (which will include a W5,000 tip for the hard-working staff at Braai Republic). WinK – The Kyodae kitchen and taphouse is celebrating the holiday season by knocking up a feast of seasonal delights. They are offering dinner on December 23rd, 24th, and 25th and will have two seatings on each day. The dinner Includes a glass of wine or beer, oven roasted turkey, turkey gravy, red wine cranberry sauce, roasted garlic mashed potato, ham quiche with mushroom, sauteed vegetables and vanilla creme brulee for dessert. There are also optional all you can drink specials for those who really want to let their hair down. To reserve your seat you can contact them on 02-6053-3249 or via their facebook page

Route 66 – This year will be the 4th Annual Route 66 Christmas Eve Buffet on Sunday, December 24th. The lunch begins at 3 pm, and includes turkey, ham, gravy, sweet potato casserole, garlic mashed potatoes, veggies, rolls, buffalo chicken dip, apple and pumpkin pie, and vanilla ice cream. Tickets are 40,000 and come with a drink. There is limited availability so swing buy the bar or visit their facebook page to reserve your spot.

Bull and Barrel – On December 24th & 25th, Bull and Barrel will host their 6th Annual Christmas dinner buffet. Their traditional dinner will include roast turkey, chestnut stuffing with turkey gravy, cod au gratin, roast ham, roast potatoes, green beans and seasonal vegetables, cranberry sauce, and cheesecake with berry coulis for dessert. As usual you also get a complimentary alcoholic beverage. Tickets are 40,000 per guest with cash payment or bank transfer. El Pino 323 – For those who come from warmer and spicier climates, you might feel more comfortable scarfing down a festive Mexican Feast. El Pino is offering all you can eat tacos for two hours on December 23rd & 24th for a mere 35,000 per person. There are a whole host of tacos to choose from, and even a few extra dishes. I was very tempted by this one myself, though I’d hate to bankrupt them with the sheer amount of tacos I would be capable of eating. Vatos – Christmas is a time for drinking and eating, but it is also a time for eating. Thankfully you can do all three at Vatos’s pay it Forward party on saturday December 23rd. The menu hasn’t been published yet, but ‘ve yet tio eat a bad meal there yet. The tickets cost 40,000 per person and the proceeds will go to Jerusulam Children’s Ministry. You can stuff your face, get your drink on with some of their awesome cocktails and give yourself a big pat on the back for giving back to the local community. Its win, win, win! Four Seasons – December 1st-31st  – Nothing says Christmas like a fully cooked turkey dinner, and if you live life without an oven  the Four Seasons Hotel has you covered. Throughout the month of December they will be providing fully cooked turkey dinners packaged and ready to go. So if you are having friends over or just eat the whole thing yourself (no judgement here) you can pre-order one through their website. If you would rather eat inside the hotel they are holding a seasonal brunch at the Market Kitchen on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and NYE , and an all you can drink Champagne one at Boccalino (125,000). Thanksgiving Guide 2017

Woo hoo,  the holidays are upon us and that means turkey, lashings and lashings of turkey. Now being British we don’t usually celebrate Thanksgiving, but I’m on board with any holiday that revolves around food, so Thanksgiving is always an event worth celebrating in my book. Now its usually around this time of year that we miss our loved ones back home the most, them and the copious amounts of sumptuous seasonal food that we get to enjoy. And although you might be missing out on your mums cooking, you can still get a darn good turkey dinner at a number of Seoul’s restaurants.

Dominic – For a classy yet affordable Thanksgiving feast, look no further than sleek and cool Dominic. This year’s menu includes deep fried turkey, port citrus cranberry sauce, dough bread apple bacon stuffing, Dominic’s amazing cream spinach on brioche, corn pomegranate slaw with caramelised onion mashed potato, and bourbon apple pie with hot chocolate sauce. All of this is available for 60,000 won per person on Wednesday 22nd at 7pm, Thursday 23rd at 6:30 and 8:30, or on Sunday 26th at 2pm, 5pm or 7pm. Leo’s – The bar above The Concorde in HBC is offering a Thanksgiving meal this year. The feast will comprise of juicy turkey, succulent ham, buttery mashed potatoes, bacony stuffing, savoury gravy, fresh seasonal veg, freshly baked bread and served with a glass of Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon and in-house made pumpkin pie. The dinner is available on Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, 7 pm to 10 pm, and is 35,000 won per person.  See the facebook page or call 010-7490-7311 for more details or to make a reservation.

Southside Parlor – For those who want to add a little bit of southern flair and some finger lickin’ goodness to their TG celebrations head on down to one of my favourite cocktail bars. The Texans will be serving Creole spiced turkey, sage cornbread stuffing, cranberry hibiscus relish, smoked gravy, cornmeal fried okra, garlic mashed potatoes, chorizo Mac & Cheese, broccoli cheddar casserole, charred corn salad, berry cobbler and a seasonal cocktail of your choice for 45,000 per person . There are two seating available 6-8pm or 8:30-10:30pm on both Thanksgiving Thursday (Nov. 23rd) and Sunday (Nov. 26th), Seats must be reserved  in advance via their facebook event page.

WinK –  From Thursday November 24th- Sunday November 27th you can get a thanksgiving dinner plate with a beer or mulled cocktail for 32,000. The plate will include turkey, sausage and apple stuffing, roast garlic mashed potatoes, home style gravy, asparagus casserole, 5 Mac & Cheese, red wine cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. There will be two seatings for each night one at 6pm and one at 8pm. And for those of you who really want to celebrate they have an all you can drink option for an extra 10,000-20,000. Reservations are recommended, you can make them through their facebook event page.

Route 66 – Route 66 will be celebrating with their 4th Thanksgiving dinner. The 40,000 dinner includes a drink,  turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, 66’s sweet potato casserole, corn bread, veggies, pumpkin and apple pie w/vanilla ice cream. Cali Kitchen will be hosting its third annual Thanksgiving dinner. The menu hasn’t been completely confirmed yet but will include a welcome drink, Peruvian Sous Vide Turkey  , and Wagyu Pastrami and of course plenty of sides. If you have tried the Cali Kitchen Pastrami before, you will know that it is not to be missed. There will be two seatings on Friday, November 24th at 6:15pm, and 8:30pm. Bull and Barrel – On Thursday November 23rd, Friday November 24th & Sunday November 26th Bull & Barrel will be serving up their annual all you can eat buffet. You can stuff yourself ’til you pop for 40,000 per person. The buffet includes an alcoholic beverage, turkey, ham, sage and onion stuffing, mashed & roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, gravy, mac & cheese and pumpkin pie! There are two seating on Thursday 24th of November one at 6:30 & 8:30 pm, one on Friday at 6:30pm and three on Sunday the 27th of November at 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm. Plant – This year Plant is offering a Vegan Thanksgiving, for those who eat a meat free diet. The dinner includes Plant’s housemade Tofurkey, Mashed potatoes, Homestyle gravy, Grilled stuffing loaf, Pumpkin squash soup, Walnut cranberry bread, Sautéed greens, Kohlrabi apple slaw, Cranberry sauce, you choice of Pumpkin pie or Apple crumble and a glass of wine or craft beer. There are two seatings on Thursday November 243rd, tickets cost 29,000won, and reservations are recommended, call 02-749-1981 or check out their facebook page to make one. 

Vatos Urban Collective – For those not remotely interested in Turkey then Drinksgiving at Vatos could be just the event you are looking for. The cocktail and live music event  will be held on Friday November 24th from 7pm-10pm. Tickets include four drinks coupons and entry to the concert. Tickets cost 33,000, see their facebook event page for more details.

The Four Seasons – For those who want to keep it classy on such a fine occasion The Four Seasons Hotel will have Turkey Dinner To Go packages available from the 19th of November – 31st of December for those who want to dine at home without the work. Their package which costs 250,000 includes 5-6kg roasted turkey, Grilled Four Seasons Pork Sausage Roll, Butter-Sauteed Green Beans, Grilled Corn, Roasted Pumpkin, Carrots with Orange Sauce, Cranberry Sauce, Giblet Gravy (Red Wine Sauce), Apple Cinnamon Tart with Vanilla Sauce and Whipped Cream. Turkeys need to be ordered at least three days in advance, you can order one by calling +82 2 6388 5530. The JW Marriott Dongdaemun also has a similar offer. See their website for details. 

 

Linus BBQ – HBC

Southern style barbecue has been a big old trend in these parts over the past year or two, though very few places have managed enjoy the success of Linus Kim. The Linus Itaewon location has had queues around the clock since it opened, and the variety of copycats haven’t made a dent in it. Luckily for those of us who like the food but don’t want  to wait in line for the privilege, Linus has just opened up a second location in Haebangchon.

The new place is set over two floors and is located 3/4 of the way up the main road in Haebangchon. On the first floor is the bar with some counter style seating overlooking the scenic beauty that is HBC, while upstairs is the kitchen and the familiar wooden tables and chairs. The paint is still practically wet on this place, as it only opened during Chuseok so we were easily able to grab a table for dinner. Once the word spreads I am sure this will change, however unlike the other location this one will take reservations, saving you from those monumental queues if you plan ahead.

Like its customers stomachs, the Linus menu has grown in size at this new location. All the favourites are still on, as are the lunchtime sandwiches, and the new smoked chickens. Having eaten the pulled pork and brisket about a thousand times I was very excited to try the muster of Linus’ chicken. You can eat it in a variety of ways, but we sprung for the new Smoked Chicken Platter (22,000). This comes with a whole smoked chicken, six sliders, white sauce, tomato salad and taters and gravy. The chicken had a real heady smokey flavour throughout and came away nicely from the bones. The skin wasn’t as crisp as I might have liked it, but it was in no way under cooked either. The meat was tender and juicy and went very well with the new white BBQ sauce. I liked this thick garlicky white sauce a lot. I have to say I was very impressed with the size of this smoked chicken platter. Both TFB and myself can eat a lot but we struggled to finish half of this as we ordered another dish. I think we both would have left full and happy, had we only had this especially as it works out to only 11,000 per person.

One of my favourite items from Linus is the Da Bomb Sandwich (13,900), but  they only serve it at lunch at the Itaewon branch. Due to my schedule I am not often a lady who lunches, so  rarely got to indulge as often as I would have liked. The toasted bun is layered with brisket, cheese, caramelized onions, fried pickles and a sweet BBQ sauce. I love the combination of the tender smokey meat, with the cheese and onions. With the slightly sourness and crunch from the deep fried pickles it just ticks all my flavour boxes. We made this sandwich into set for an extra 2,500 won for our sandwich which included two sides of our choice, I got the creamy slaw and skinny fries. For some reason all the sandwich set upgrades are different prices which I found odd, as surely the sides cost the same no matter the sandwich. Hopefully it is just an oversight on the menu.

Not only does Linus have good food, they have a damn fine drinks menu too. My favourite is the Pina Colada (21,000). This gigantic frozen drink  is suggested for two, but being a bit of a lush I prefer it for one. As you can see it is served in a hollowed out pineapple. The cocktail itself incredibly tasty, creamy, and refreshing and has a good flavour of rum coming through. They also serve it with a cup of pineapple that hasn’t been used in your drink which I find a really nice touch. The rest of the drinks menu is equally stellar, and having had quite a few over the years I can definitely give them my seal of approval.

Overall I am quite pleased with the new locations, and vow to head there more often. Fingers crossed it wont be as busy as the Itaewon branch, but if that does happen you can still make a reservation. The new menu items are great, and they have some affordable sandwiches on offer too, which would make a cheap takeout dinner if you live locally.

Linus is located at 37-5 Yongsan-dong 2 ga, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. To get there take a train to Noksapyeong station (line 6). Walk straight out of exit 2 for about 200 meters and take the first left and walk straight along the road with all the kimchi pots. Keep walking straight along this street past Phillies & Casablanca. Summer Lane Cafe

Brunch is by far and away my favourite meal of the week. However these days the options for a good brunch in my neighbourhood are seriously dwindling. Either they have closed down, or have epic queues. Thankfully I have an amazing new brunch place to share with you, just in time for the weekend. I unfortunately cannot take credit for his one, that honour belongs to fellow blogger Toronto Seoulcialite, who was luckily enough to stumble across it last week. The fact that this place is literally around the corner from my house makes it even better, it is so close I could even roll up in my pyjamas.

Summer Lane is located in the old Revolucion location. The spot has been completely redone and and is now a very light and airy white affair, with adorable blue accents. This is a complete change from the dark and dingy industrial style space it was before. While the cafe is quite small with seating for about a dozen or so, the menu is completely fabulous and is filled with lots of brunch and breakfast treats with an Aussie twist.

After eyeing up the menu, there was one item that sounded pretty much like my idea of brunch heaven, the Bacon Waffle Egg Benedict (15,000). The cheddar waffle was piled high with cajun hollandaise, avocado, poached egg and bacon.This was pretty much all of my favourite brunch ingredients in one dish, in fact it was even more dreamy than it sounded. The egg when split oozed into a of river gold despite the fact that it had been sat on the plate for about 5 minutes while I took 100,000 pictures. The hollandaise was perfection, I didn’t really get much from the cajun spices, but it was zingy and buttery and exactly how a good hollandaise should taste. One of Korea’s best for sure. The bacon also deserves a mention, it was damn good, and the waffle light and fluffy without being too cheesy. Overall a very well executed dish, there is also a version with salmon too, which I am sure will please my fish loving friends.

There were so many delicious sounding dishes on the menu, that I was really torn about which to choose. However we finally opted for the Croissant French Toast (12,000). A Croissant topped with maple bacon, seeds and bananas. A good french toast is always nice and buttery, so using the croissant in place of the bread was a stroke of genius. As good as the french toast was, the flambeed bananas were even better, they were sweet and tasty bites of heaven. I love a dish that combines sweet and salty flavours, so having the bacon on top really completed it for me, and the beautiful flowers adorning it were the cherry on top of the cake.

While I generally enjoy a cocktail with my brunch, it was early on a weekday when we visited, so the few shreds of social dignity I have left dictated that I should not be drinking at such an hour. Instead I was allured by the Aussie Vanilla Latte (6,500). An ice vanilla latte is always my coffee of choice, so when i found this one was topped with a scoop of ice cream, I was as giddy as a school girl. Also on the menu are a variety of other coffees, homemade ades, and a few beers. Sadly there are currently no cocktails, which is the only thing stopping this place from being my favourite brunch place in the entire world. However after chatting with the owners they said they will consider adding some to the menu, so fingers crossed!!!

Walk straight until you reach the underpass then go through and exit using the left hand stairs. Follow the road around past Paris Baguette and the Well Being Mart until you reach Cheese-alot / Maloneys Pub. Take the alleyway going up the hill, then turn right. The Concorde

I know it seems as though I have been away for forever, and I have. But I’m back now and there’s nothing like coming home to a bar where everyone knows your name to a well made cocktail. To celebrate being home I met up with my crew and went for another fabulous dinner at McCoys in HBC, then after headed to the Concorde after for a few apres dinner drinks. Now I think we all know I enjoyed a drink more than most, and luckily for me my neighbourhood is packed with dozens upon dozens of bars. In fact it is positively teeming with them, but my new favourite place to sit and drink while watching the world go by is The Concorde.

While The Concorde has been a HBC fixture for some time now, it has just undergone a change of management and a menu renovation. One of my oldest friends in Korea, and one of the owners of Phillies Pub, Alex Illich is now at the helm creating affordable but well executed cocktails with flair and finesse. After taking a look at the menu we were recommended the Spicy Greyhound (16,000) this was made with freshly squeezed to order grapefruit juice, Titos vodka, spicy syrup, and hellfire bitters.  As much as I love vodka I have never been big on grapefruit but a companion ordered this and it blew my mind. It was so refreshing, with a nice kick at the end from the spice. This is a super grown up cocktail that felt classy, yet cool at the same time and was one of our favourites of the night.

When I saw that there was a Cherry Mojito (12,000) on the menu I was as giddy as a school girl. Nothing makes me happier than a mojito, and a cherry flavoured one sounded like delightful way to enjoy one of my favourite fruits. The classic drink was studded with liquor soaked cherries which gave a the mojito a boozy edge. The mojito is a staple of the menu but the fruit will change weekly to accommodate what is in season. Also on the menu is a killer Old Fashioned. I have literally hated every Old fashioned I have ever tried, however this one made with rye instead was divine. The Daquiri (10,000), deserves a mention too. Not only is it cheap as chips, it was also delicious.

By the end of the night we had made our way through most of the menu and we didn’t get a bad drink all night. All the cocktails are reasonably priced and range between 10,000 – 16,000, with the option to upgrade to the super premium brands if you prefer. Though the bar itself it small, it is a place filled with friendly staff and plenty of people looking to have a good time. With the big slide windows open it was also the perfect spot to watch the hi-jinx and happenings of a weekend in Haebangchon.

Walk straight out of exit 2 for about 200 meters and take the first left and walk straight along the road with all the kimchi pots. 100 Korean Foods in 100 Days – Day 4 – Damatori

After my feast at Gwangjang Market, I was ahead of the game, but in need another few places to visit. As it was raining on Monday I thought it would be the ideal opportunity to give Pajeon a try as it is typically a rainy day food. Traditionally it was eaten by farmers on rainy days when they couldn’t tend to their crops because it was easy to prepare and the stodgy food was nourishing for the mind and body. The sound of Pajeon sizzling in the pan also recreates the sound of the rain.

Traditionally Pajeon is served a long side Makgeolli , a traditional fermented rice alcohol. So I headed over to Damotori in HBC as they have such an awesome selection. One of the best things about Damatori is that they have a Makgeolli tasting set for only 3,000 won. Which allows you to try five different Makgeolis to let yo see which one you like best. My favourite was the 복술도가 but we decided to get a bottle of our second favourite instead because it was cheaper (7,000). So food number 5 was a drink, not technically my favourite alcoholic beverage but it is very Korean, and different to anything else you find in the world. So it had to be tried.

My sixth food was Pajeon, a savoury Korean pancake made with green onions. There are a couple different versions at Damotori, and as they were out of the most common green onion and seafood version, we ordered the onion and mushroom instead (14,000). Honestly I don’t like seafood all that much, and I adore mushrooms so this was a plus in my box. The pajeon was cut into small pieces perfect for sharing. Though I thought the pancake itself was under-seasoned, with not a great deal of flavour by itself. The side dish of pickled soy sauce onions was very good, much better than the Gwangjang Market version. They added a nice salty and sour element to the dish, but a side of gochujang would have helped too. All in a a good meal for a rainy day though.

Brooklyn Bagel Cafe

Last weekend I decided to embrace the spring weather and get my fat arse out for a workout. Much to his dismay I dragged TFB out with me too. After a bracing walk around the park and quick sop at the HBC Ogari fruit and veg lady we headed back down. For being so virtuous I thought we were both in need of reward so we stopped by Brooklyn Bagel cafe on the way home for a treat. The small store is located at the far end of the main drag of HBC almost opposite the CU. Up at the counter is a menu and a refrigerator full of different cream cheeses and 8 different flavours of bagels. The cute cafe has seating inside and out which is always a plus on a sunny day.

After much deliberation, I decided to go for one of the sandwich style bagels and settled on the Chicken Salad (4,000). The best thing about this sandwich is that they let you choose your bagel, and after looking at their selection I went for the everything bagel. The bagel was nice enough, and it came stuffed with a rather nice chicken mayo and a little bit of salad. For 4,000 it was definitely a bargain, you rarely find a sandwich that is under 5,000 these days and although it was small I think most people would be satisfied.

TFB true to form opted for the Salmon with cream cheese (6,000), probably because he knew I wouldn’t ask for a bite. He got his salmon on a jalapeno bagel which personally I thought an odd choice but each to their own. I didn’t actually try this, as you know my feelings about salmon well, especially stuff at the cheaper end of the scale. But he said it had a nice flavour, and there was plenty of salmon with a little bit of zing from the red onion. He agree that the bagel was decent for the price, though wouldn’t have noticed that it was jalapeño flavoured.

Overall I cant say its the best bagel I’ve ever had, or even the best one I have had in Seoul, so I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. However if you are in HBC and in need of a sandwich style snack on a budget or fancy picking up breakfast for you and your latest Tinder hook up then its worth swinging by especially if you are up early or on a walk of shame because it opens at 7am.

Walk straight out of exit 2 for about 200 meters and take the first left and walk straight along the road with all the kimchi pots. 궈일교자

January is almost always a very bleak month. It’s cold and miserable, you’ve failed your new health kick after a week and a half, and everyone is broke after spending too much money at Christmas. Honestly there really isn’t a whole lot to look forward to unless you are going to Cambodia for a week like I am tomorrow (please don’t hate me!). Despite these rather depressing conditions, the restaurant scene around Itaewon is still popping, with a whole host of new restaurants  opening their doors in the past few weeks.

Now one such place that has opened up in Gyeongridan is 궈일교자 . This new restaurant popped up overnight in a spot that used to host a 7-11. It’s not surprising that the minuscule 7-11 bit the dust as there are much larger convenience stores in spitting distance. The front portion of the tiny store is made up of the kitchen which boasts big towers of steamers to help lure in the crowds looking for shelter from the biting cold. At the back of the store is some counter style seating for the best part of a dozen patrons.

The menu like the store itself is pretty simple. There are  half a dozen different types of mandu, along with a few large ones and two different typoes of noodles. Honestly it was the cheap prices that lured me in, as they agreed with my new frugal sensibilities. Being in desperate need of iron in my diet I went for the BBQ Dumplings (3,000 for 6). The dumplings were stuffed with galbi and galbi sauce, which I had never eaten in dumpling form before. The meat was sweet and tasty, and they paired nicely with the free pickled radish.

We also tried the meat dumplings (2,500 for 8). These were pretty much your bog standard gogi mandu that you could buy frozen and make yourself at home. They were possibly a touch fancier than that and did taste pretty great when dipped into the accompanying vinegar. If you don’t fancy cooking these are a nice cheap and cheerful option.

As it was so cold and I was in the mood for soup so we also got the Udon (4,000). This was alright, honestly the broth was fairly unmemorable but the noodles were filling. At least the price is right. There were some other dumplings on the menu that I’d be more likely to try over these if I came again.

Honestly I cant say that this place was that amazing and if you are looking for standout dumplings you’d be better going to Stacked. The bbq galbi dumplings were tasty enough though, and I would probably pick myself up a to go order from time to time as it’s right by my house. Its real draw is its prices, mandu plus some soup for about 6,000, you can’t say fairer than that, though of course you can find similar places in neighbourhoods all over Korea, just rarely in ours, and for that alone it is worth a mention.

Walk straight until you reach the underpass, then go through and exit using the stairs on the left hand side. Follow the road around passing the church and Well Being mart. You will see 궈일교자 just up ahead on the right hand side after Cheese-a-lot. They don’t currently have a phone number so I can’t give any more information.

Cre8 Cookies

I’ve been known to enjoy a cookie or two from time to time, although I wouldn’t say I eat them that often. When it comes to sweet treats cookies are generally at the back of the line, I’d choose a brownie or slice of red velvet any day of the week. But after seeing the numerous photos of the Cre8 Cookies from friends and other bloggers, I couldn’t resist going to see what all the fuss was about.

Cre8 cookies is located in one of the tiny alleyways off the main street in Gyeongridan, and is dangerously close to my home. When I was walking to get there I could smell the place a good few minutes before I saw it, it was heavenly. The shop itself is cute, pink, and totally adorable. I was lucky enough to arrive just as the cookies were being brought out of the oven, it was incredibly good timing on my part.

There are currently nine different cookies on the menu, although seasonal specials seem to be added all the time. For those who want to sit in, there is also an array of hot drinks available. The cookies on the menu vary from 1,900 – 2,500 each. I oped for the Peanut Butter (1,900), Double Chocolate Chip (2,000), and a Red Velvet (3,000), which was a special for Halloween. The server also very kindly gave me an MnM cookie on the house because they didn’t have any of the stuffed cookies ready.

All of the cookies were especially delicious, the peanut butter which was still warm from the oven just melted in mouth, while the double chocolate had a rich cocoa flavour which is sure to please all chocolate lovers. However my favourite of the bunch had to be the red velvet, oh my god was this good. I nearly killed TFB after I found he had eaten a rather large portion of it whilst I wasn’t looking. The cookie itself was studded with white chocolate cream cheese swirls that just danced upon the taste buds. It was so, so, good. I wish I had bought a dozen of them.

Honestly I cant wait to go back and try more of these fantastic cookies especially the stuffed ones, I have certainly been converted into being a cookie lover, and I am thrilled it’s so close to my house. This is the perfect way to add on a few extra pounds to keep me warm this winter. One tip if you are coming from afar and want to avoid disappointment, you can pre-order your cookies via their facebook page. Some of the large stuffed cookies like the Nutella and coffee marshmallow ones need a little extra time to be made so have to be ordered in advance.

Sprout

As you may know I have been trying to be a little more health conscious lately, although that didn’t seem to stop me stuffing my face with pizza and cheeseburgers while guzzling Moscow Mules like they were going out of fashion last weekend. To balance my somewhat dubious diet I try to eat as cleanly as possible from Monday to Friday. So when Sprout, a vegan and completely additive free homemade meal service offered to provide me with a weeks worth of free meals I was only too happy to oblige them in their offer.
